LIVE: Fire crews tackling major blaze in Glasgow city centre

A premises on Union Street in the city caught fire on Sunday afternoon, with the blaze spreading to upper floors.

Due to the proximity to Central Station, ScotRail announced that no services would run to or from the transport hub until at least Monday morning.

Lower level services may run through the station without passengers being able to board, and there are no services in or out of the higher levels.

A statement said: “Scottish Fire and Rescue are dealing with a fire in a building near Glasgow Central and the station has had to close.

“Customers should make their own travel arrangements, as we cannot guarantee that you will be able to complete your journey.”

The Voco Grand Central hotel was evacuated on Sunday evening, as firefighters battled to control the blaze.

Eyewitnesses described queues of traffic outside of the station, with traffic backed up on St Vincent Street and streets around the station closed.

Network Rail said: “Due to a fire on Union Street, train services from Glasgow Central Station are suspended. The station will remain closed tomorrow morning. If you are expecting to travel tonight or first thing tomorrow, please check with your train operator first

“Buses were also unable to operate on the streets surrounding the station, with disruption expected to last until the end of Sunday.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “More than 60 firefighters are currently working to tackle a large building fire on Union Street, Glasgow.

“We were alerted at 3.46pm on Sunday, 8 March, to reports of a fire affecting the ground floor of a four-storey commercial building.

“At its height, 12 fire appliances and three high-reach vehicle were mobilised to the area, where firefighters are currently working to extinguish the fire.
“There are no reported casualties, and crews remain at the scene.”
