Mission Fire Rescue are on scene at a large structure fire on 7th Ave., by Cedar.
At about 6 p.m. on March 9, crews were called to a blaze at Chartwell Carrington House.
According to a Facebook notification by the City of Mission, “Mission Fire Rescue Service and all available emergency resources are on scene and actively responding. To support residents who may be displaced or need assistance, a Reception Centre has been established at the Mission Leisure Centre.”
It goes on to ask people to “avoid the area and give first responders the space they need to do their work safely and effectively. If you do not need to be in the vicinity, choose an alternate route and keep roads clear for emergency vehicles.”
Flames and smoke could be seen rising in the air as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. The building was fully engulfed.
According to the Mission RCMP, 7th Avenue is closed in both directions between Cedar Street and Briskham Street. Residents of the retirement home have been evacuated and are being transported by bus to the Mission Leisure Centre.
Family members coming to meet loved ones should attend the Leisure Centre, not the retirement residence. Emergency Support Services are on scene there to help evacuees.
At this time, organizers are asking people not to drop off donations at the centre.
Staff from the retirement residence are still in the process of trying to confirm whether everyone was safely evacuated.
There has been no official statement regarding any injuries.
More updates will be released as information becomes available.
