CP24’s Andrew Brennan reports from the scene of a dispute in Brampton that left one person dead and two others injured.
Friends and neighbours have identified a woman who was found dead after an altercation in Brampton overnight as homicide detectives launch an investigation into the incident, which left two other people seriously injured.
Peel Regional Police said they were called to the area of Centre Street and Queen Street East at around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday for reports of a fight.
When officers arrived on scene, they found one person dead and two others with non-life-threatening injuries.
Friends and neighbours identified the deceased victim as “June.” They described her a “wonderful” senior who worked at a nearby laundromat.
“She’s the nicest lady there is,” one neighbour told CP24. “She’d give you the shirt off her back or anything.”
Yellow police tape cordoned off the area Tuesday, with a heavy police presence that appeared to focus on two homes.
‘No threat to public safety’
“This is an isolated incident and there is no threat to public safety,” police said in an email to CP24.
“The Homicide Bureau has assumed control of the investigation. The scene is currently being processed for evidence and is expected to be cleared shortly.”
One suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the incident. Police confirmed to CTV News Toronto that 65-year-old Wilfred Kent has been charged with second-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault.
On July 30, Kent was also charged with wilfully causing unnecessary pain and suffering to an animal, court documents show.
Neighbours told CTV News on Tuesday that they believed that the dispute that turned deadly overnight may have involved some people from the area who contacted police last week to report an alleged case of animal cruelty. Police, however, have not confirmed that detail.
Police are asking anyone with information or video surveillance footage of the scene to contact investigators with the homicide bureau or leave an anonymous tip through Peel Crime Stoppers.
Police have not provided any information about the relationship between the suspect and the victim or on a possible motive for the deadly assault.
Kent was scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing on Tuesday.
