Customers of Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland have been reporting mystery transactions showing on their banking apps this morning (Thursday 12 March). The Lloyds Banking Group, which owns all three brands, says the issue has now been resolved and it’s looking into what happened. Here’s what we know so far.

MoneySavingExpert.com (MSE) has spotted dozens of posts on social media from concerned customers who say they’ve seen the transactions and bank account details of other customers in their banking app.

Worryingly, some say the transactions appear to reveal personal information such as wage payments, payments made to schools and benefit payments.

We’ll be looking into what this means for consumers’ data protection and privacy and will be updating this story shortly with more information on what you can do if affected, including who you can complain to.

A spokesperson for Lloyds Banking Group told us: “We’re sorry that some customers experienced an issue viewing transactions in the app for a short time this morning. The issue was quickly resolved and we’re looking into what happened.”

Earlier today, MSE founder Martin Lewis asked his social media followers on X and Facebook about the issue:

Do you use the Lloyds, Bank of Scotland or Halifax apps? People have been messsaging me this morning of being shown other peoples transactions. I want to see how widespread this is. Has it happened to you. If so

a) What are you seeing? Which app.
b) If it is someone elses…

‘I could see multiple transactions; wages, payments to schools and full names’

Martin’s social media posts have had over 3,000 responses, suggesting this is likely to be a widespread issue. Here’s just a handful of the comments we’ve seen:

They are saying this was just a technical glitch but we could see multiple customer transactions – this included where they work, their wages, payments they were making to schools, money they were transferring to other people with full names

Yes, Lloyds app. Every time I opened it I saw a different person’s transactions including mortgage payments etc. Didn’t open individual payments so not sure if account details were visible.
