WASHINGTON — Retired Air Force Maj. Gen. William “Neil” McCasland went missing almost two weeks ago in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and multiple agencies have been involved in the search to find him.
McCasland, 68, was last seen about 11 a.m. Feb. 27 in the area of Quail Run Court NE, according to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, which issued a Silver Alert on the day he went missing.
The sheriff’s office said McCasland is believed to have left his residence on foot, and described him as an avid outdoorsman who’s known to hike, run and cycle.
Due to McCasland’s Air Force background, the sheriff’s office said it is coordinating with multiple agencies including the FBI and Kirtland Air Force Base. The agencies have found no evidence of foul play, the sheriff’s office said.
Investigators have done a full canvass of the neighborhood and are following up on credible tips, the sheriff’s office said. They asked residents to check their security cameras and to preserve video files.
“Our priority is finding Mr. McCasland safely,” said Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen. “Our investigators and search teams are working continuously, and we’re coordinating closely with our local, state, and federal partners. We’re asking the public to help by checking and preserving any security camera footage from the area and reporting any information immediately. We will share confirmed updates as soon as we can while protecting the integrity of the investigation.”

According to his bio, McCasland was commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, and was responsible for managing the Air Force’s $2.2 billion science and technology program.
He had previously served at the Pentagon as director of Space Acquisition and as director of Special Programs for the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics.
He was commissioned in 1979 after graduating from the U.S. Air Force Academy and holds a doctorate degree in astronautical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
