A section of North America’s largest ski resort remains closed until further notice after a rock slide on Whistler Mountain.

On Thursday, March 12, just before 8:30 a.m., Whistler Blackcomb Operations posted an update on X stating that Whistler Peak and the Peak Express Chair will remain closed while its team assesses a rock slide incident in the area.

Images shared on social media show a huge dark scar across the wintry landscape at the popular ski destination.

“Whistler Blackcomb confirms that a rock slide occurred in the vicinity of Whistler Peak early on the morning of March 12, 2026, while the resort was closed,” said Dane Gergovich, senior manager of communications for Whistler Blackcomb and Vail Resorts.

“No one was in the area at the time, and there are no reported injuries. Whistler Peak and the Peak Express Chair will remain closed until further notice while our operations team assesses the situation.”

A look at the live mountain cam at Whistler Peak shows it completely deserted, with the Peak Express at a standstill.

Users on the Whistler subreddit shared their disbelief at the size of the landslide, as well as their gratefulness that the incident didn’t cause any injuries or deaths.

“Very, very lucky this happened when the hill was closed,” said one commenter.

“Only skied below that like a million times,” added another user.

There is no confirmation on the cause of the rock slide as of press time.

Visitors can keep track of the lift and terrain status on Whistler Blackcomb’s website.
