At least two men from Northern Ireland have been charged with serious assault over an incident shared in a social media video taken outside an Old Firm match in which a man appears to have his head stamped on.
The incident took place on Helen Street, near Ibrox stadium, after Sunday’s Scottish Cup quarter-final between Celtic and Rangers.
The end of the match was marred by chaotic scenes in the Glasgow stadium as fans clashed on the pitch.
Violent scenes continued outside the ground, as Police Scotland made nine arrests in what it referred to as “despicable” and “shameful” scenes.
One incident of fan violence was captured in the Helen Street area of the Scottish city near the stadium, during which a man is thrown to the ground during an altercation.
Footage circulating on social media appears to show a number of men stamp on his head while he lays on the ground beside a minibus before the crowd disperses.
Three men, aged 54, 23 and 20, have been arrested and charged with serious assault in connection with the incident.
It’s understood at least two of the three men charged travelled to the match from Northern Ireland as part of Rangers supporters clubs.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said the three men have been charged with serious assault and are due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date.
A date has not yet been set for when the trio will appear in court.
Police Scotland Chief Superintendent Kate Stephen said earlier this week the force was working with both football clubs in order to progress an investigation into the crowd trouble.
“A number of arrests have already been made and Police Scotland will now work with both clubs and the Scottish Football Association to carry out a robust investigation following the scenes on the pitch at the conclusion of the match,” she said.
“Officers and stewards were faced with extreme hostility and violence over a sustained period, with many individuals having armed themselves with items clearly intended to cause harm.
“Officers and members of the public have been injured in this despicable display and I want to express my thanks to all officers and staff deployed.”
