When Birmingham City fans left Bramall Lane after their side’s 3-0 defeat by Sheffield United on 20 December, you could forgive them for thinking their season would peter out after Christmas.

That defeat left Blues 14th in the Championship standings, but a bright start to 2026 means they are now tenth with play-off ambitions still lingering around St Andrew’s.

This afternoon they host a Sheffield United side who would have seen a play-off place as the bare minimum back in August.

But after a dismal start to the season under Ruben Selles, the returning Chris Wilder has managed to steer his boyhood club back up to 13th with a play-off place probably too far away, now 11 points adrift of sixth-placed Wrexham.

Wilder has won his last three Championship games against Birmingham City by an aggregate score of 8-0, however, and another win today would have permutations for the sides hoping to sneak into the top six.
