North Korea fired off around 10 missiles on Saturday, the military in Seoul said, days after South Korea and the U.S. kicked off 11 days of annual joint military drills.
The Defense Ministry in Tokyo also confirmed the launches of “multiple ballistic missiles” from North Korea’s western coast, with the weapons traveling about 340 kilometers before landing outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone in the Sea of Japan.
Saturday’s launches were notable for the sheer number of missiles fired. The North has typically only fired off one to three missiles during shows of force, though there have been exceptions, including a barrage of at least 10 missiles in May 2024.
