He said: “I was very impressed with the performance. From start to finish we were on top and creating chances. We had 26 shots and we were hitting the target. We were ruthless in front of goal.

“We came out at the start of the second half and we were a bit cagey, but then we started to get to grips with things and played our game. We kept attacking and kept Hull going back towards their goal. We continued with fast attacks, which I keep asking the lads for. Credit to them.

“My team selection today was probably the hardest one I’ve done. I was thinking about the fact it was the third game in the week and I was questioning whether the same players could do it again. Southampton was a tough game physically and then there was a lot of emotion at the end. I took my time and then listened to my head, before going with my gut.

“I’m really pleased that it could’ve been five or six on another day, because recently we’ve needed about six or seven chances to score one. We could’ve had a penalty, Callum Styles has hit the post and their keeper has made some good saves. We kept knocking on the door all game. We have to attack like that when we’re here at The Hawthorns because that’s what the fans want to see.
