27-year-old Addison McCallum, of Toronto, faces several charges after allegedly randomly punching a man in the face near Yonge and Wellington streets.
Police have charged a suspect who allegedly randomly punched a man in the face Toronto’s downtown core last week, minutes after attacking someone else in the same area.
The assault took place near Yonge and Wellington streets on the afternoon of March 10.
The victim, Artem, spoke with CTV News Toronto about what transpired last week.
He said that he was walking to a lunch with a friend when he was suddenly attacked by a man near Yonge and Wellington streets. CTV News Toronto agreed to identify the victim by his first name only due to safety concerns.
The punch was so strong, Artem said, that he was knocked out for a few seconds.
He said he became aware of what happened in time to watch his attacker walk away.
“This guy continues to walk, very fast. I was turning and I already could not see him,” he said. “He didn’t stop. He just gave me a blow and like almost (ran).”
A group of people in the area flagged a nearby police cruiser, Artem said, and when officers arrived at the scene, he was told a similar incident had occurred minutes before.
The attack sent Artem to the hospital, where he received stitches under his left brow.
Toronto police previously confirmed that their dispatcher responded to two incidents at around the same time that day, with the first occurring in the area of Bay and Front streets just before noon.
Artem’s attack was the only incident mentioned in the news release issued on Monday.
A spokesperson for Toronto Police Service told CTV News Toronto the investigator handling the other incident had not located the victim involved.
“Therefore, they are not yet able to pursue charges in relation to the second assault,” Det. Const. Amy Davey said in an email.
Toronto police announced the suspect was arrested on Sunday, a day after CTV News Toronto reported on the incident.
Police did not share any suspect details initially, but did confirm it is the same suspect wanted in connection with Artem’s assault.
Police have charged 27-year-old Addison McCallum, of Toronto, with one count each of assault causing bodily harm and obstruct police officer, and two counts of failing to comply with probation. The charges have not been tested in court.
Investigators have shared an image of the accused as they believe there may be more victims.
