On social media, The Peppered Pig described Prince William and Greg stopping outside the pub as “such an honour”.
Debbie said: “We knew a celebrity was coming on the back with Greg but wasn’t aware who it was.
“About 30 minutes before, security started to arrive so we knew it was someone massive. I was a bit nervous and starstruck.”
Debbie said the prince was “a normal guy at the end of the day” who “came across as lovely and down to earth”.
“It was quite brief,” she said, “but he was really friendly. It was a nice surprise for a little village.”
Greg was later joined on the tandem by TV presenter Gethin Jones as he rode through Melbourne, near Pocklington, where they were greeted by local schoolchildren.
Greg and Prince William recently worked together on a special edition of Radio 1’s Life Hacks, where they discussed male mental health and male suicide.
Greg has described the challenge – dubbed Radio 1’s Longest Ride with Greg James for Red Nose Day, external – as his most “ludicrous challenge” yet for Comic Relief.
