A Coventry armed robber who became trapped inside the shop he attempted to rob has been jailed. Jordan Peebles targeted Mace in Bell Green.
Peebles, 32, arrived at Mace on Riley Square on Christmas Eve last year and assaulted a staff member, Warwick Crown Court heard. He then threatened them with a large kitchen knife.
After the worker got to safety, Peebles began placing goods from behind the counter into his bag. While this was happening, however, the staff member closed the shutter and locked him inside the building.

Peebles unsuccessfully tried to open the shutter and soon realised he was trapped. Police were called to the scene and Peebles pleaded to be released before being arrested.
Appearing at Warwick Crown Court, Peebles, of Purcell Road, pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced to four years and four months in jail. Detective Sergeant Jay Aston described the break-in as ‘shocking’ and praised the staff member for showing ‘incredible bravery.’
Detective Sergeant Jay Aston, from Coventry Police, said: “It was a shocking knifepoint robbery which could have resulted in death or serious injury to the man Peebles assaulted.

“He showed incredible bravery and quick thinking to defend himself, leave the shop and lower the shutters, trapping Peebles inside. I hope Peebles will have time to reflect on his actions and choices while in prison and am proud of the work of all the officers involved, including the officers who were at the scene within minutes to arrest him.”
A spokesman for Coventry Police said: “Every day we work to investigate shop thefts, working alongside businesses and the local authority to deal with prolific offenders.
“We encourage anyone who witnesses shoplifting to report it to us, as this enables us to build an accurate picture of who is committing these offences, where and when. Call 101 or go online to report crime to us, and always call 999 in an emergency.”
