Barnes has scored 14 goals in all competitions for Newcastle United this season, which is more than England internationals Morgan Rogers, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Jarrod Bowen.

Of Tuchel’s options on the flanks, only Barnes’s Newcastle team-mate Anthony Gordon has scored more goals, although nine of his 17 have been from the penalty spot.

Scotland manager Steve Clarke revealed last month that Barnes had snubbed Scotland by saying: “It’s the perennial question, everybody keeps asking me about it. This time I can say for sure, Harvey is going to concentrate on trying to play for England. He’s not going to come to Scotland. You can put that one out there.

“Nobody needs to ask me about it any more and nobody needs to ask Harvey. He can make his decision and we move on.”

Barnes has one senior England cap, earned against Wales in 2020, and played four times for the under-21s and made 10 appearances for the under-20s.
