WASHINGTON (TNND) — Joe Kent, the former National Counterterrorism Center director, said Monday that President Donald Trump is trying to get peace with Iran, but Israel will be against it.

“President Trump is working to get peace with Iran, if he can make this happen it will be a very good thing for our nation & our allies in the Gulf,” Kent wrote on X. “The Israelis will be against this, but POTUS is strong & can get them on board.”

On Monday, Trump announced that he ordered the Department of War to postpone strikes on Iran’s power plants for five days.

“I AM PLEASED TO REPORT THAT THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND THE COUNTRY OF IRAN, HAVE HAD, OVER THE LAST TWO DAYS, VERY GOOD AND PRODUCTIVE CONVERSATIONS REGARDING A COMPLETE AND TOTAL RESOLUTION OF OUR HOSTILITIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST,” he wrote on Truth Social.

However, Iran said that Tehran is not in talks with Trump and that the president backed down.

“Trump backed down from attacking critical infrastructure as Iran’s military threats became credible,” a senior Iranian official said, according to The Hill newspaper. “Financial market pressure and the threat of bonds within the US and the West have increased, and this has been another important factor in this retreat.”

Last month, Israel and the U.S. conducted joint strikes on Iran over concerns that the country had missiles.

Iran retaliated, resulting in other countries getting hit and U.S. soldiers being killed or injured.

Kent resigned from his position at the National Counterterrorism Center due to the war.

“I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran,” Kent wrote on X. “Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.”
