The pilot and co-pilot of a passenger plane were killed when it collided with a fire engine on a runway at New York’s LaGuardia Airport.

Pictures showed the heavily damaged nose and cockpit section of the Air Canada Express aircraft, which had flown in from Montreal.

At least two other people were injured, including a police sergeant and an officer.

The CRJ-900 plane, operated by Jazz Aviation, a regional partner of Air Canada, was carrying 76 passengers on flight AC8646 when it struck the vehicle at around 11.40pm local time.

FlightRadar24, the flight-tracking platform, said the aircraft was “rolling down the runway” when it struck the fire engine as it crossed its path.
