Last week, the Chronicle asked its readers in an online poll the following question: “Are you concerned that the Republican Party’s center is turning away from supporting Israel?” Of the 262 people who responded, 57% said yes and 43% said no. Comments were submitted by 83 people. A few follow.
I’m concerned that everyone is turning away from Israel.
There are many things about the Republican party that concern me, but its position on Israel does not feature in the top 10 list of problems that the GOP has created. This is in large part because its primary job, as the party in power, is to take care of the American people and they are failing miserably at that task. Additionally, the entire issue is flattened when Jewish people believe that “support for Israel” is altruistic or because there is care and concern for Jews when, in fact, the Christian Right’s agenda has a little regard for us, or worse.
If Tucker Carlson is a microcosm of this problem, then Jews no longer have a “home” in either party as both mainstream parties appear to prefer to placate their fringe elements.
The longer the operation takes in Iran, the more concerning the impact on the U.S. economy will likely affect the GOP.
I’m concerned that Democrats and Republicans are turning away from supporting Israel. I blame Netanyahu. And frankly I’m concerned that Netanyahu is turning the world against Israel — and increasing antisemitism everywhere. I have no good solutions and I am worried.
I think Trump and Netanyahu are very close friends; as long as that relationship continues Trump will continue to support Israel and will also continue to send U.S. funds. No worry.
Beware the wolf in sheep’s clothing. The GOP has mainstreamed Christian Nationalism, which is predicated on
Armageddon II.
As long as this current Israeli government is in place I’m glad that both American parties are reevaluating our military/political relationship.
There’s no doubt they are doing a complete 180-degree turn from Israel now.
I think with gross antisemitism in our world, it all comes down to politics and what game is the most promising for the politician.
I’m confident the Republican Party will do the right thing, unlike the Democratic Party, which would gladly abandon Israel. There are many polls indicating a negative shift from both Democrats and Republicans.
There is a small segment of the Republican Party that is very disappointing, but overall they have been the best supporters of Israel and fighting antisemitism. The Democratic Party has been a disgrace, and as a Jew, I had to leave the party. I never thought I would.
I’m deeply concerned. They were our staunchest allies — if for the wrong reasons.
I am a registered Democrat that votes primarily Republican. Why? Because I think both parties are turning away from Israel! We need to vote the best candidate, not on party lines. PJC
