Hawthorn should lead by more than a goal after Mabior Chol topped off his first quarter with a bad miss from 20 metres out directly in front.

The big forward could have kicked three goals but was characteristically fumbly and made poor decisions.

It was a disappointing end for the Hawks with Collingwood on the back foot immediately when they lost defender Jeremy Howe in the opening two minutes when he clashed heads with Jai Newcombe in a frightening collision.

Howe was out cold before he hit the ground and left on a medivac while Newcombe was cleared of concussion.

Nick Watson looked dangerous for the Hawks with the opening two goals to get the jump on the Magpies who sprung a surprise when Nick Daicos started on the bench.

Collingwood’s rebound game was up and running with Dan Houston winning 11 disposals, equal to his disposal tally last round.

The game is tight and looks as though it will be for the remainder.
