Air Canada is introducing major changes to its Aeroplan loyalty program that will impact how members earn points.
On Aug. 6, Air Canada announced that it’s changing the way members can earn points. Currently, Aeroplan members earn points based on the distance they travel. However, starting Jan. 1, 2026, members will earn points for every dollar spent on eligible Air Canada flights.
For example, if you spend $427 on base fare and carrier surcharges, you’ll earn 427 points. Taxes, fees, and any third-party charges aren’t included.
In addition, members can expect more frequent bonus points offers that will allow them to earn rewards faster.
Those aren’t the only significant changes for Aeroplan members starting next year.
Always wanted to be an Aeroplan Elite member? On Jan. 1, the loyalty program is also launching its Status Qualifying Credits (SQC), which will put members on the fast track towards qualifying for Elite status depending on their activities.
Members can earn SQC through eligible flight purchases, Aeroplan credit card spending, and activity with the program’s travel and everyday partners. Earn up to four SQC per dollar on eligible Air Canada fares. In addition, you can earn up to 25,000 SQC if you use your Aeroplan credit card and up to another 25,000 SQC through eligible partner activity.

And if you’re already an Aeroplan Elite Status Member, you can continue to enjoy the same benefits — complimentary checked bags, priority services, etc. — but with even more perks.
Each time you earn 10,000 SQC, you’ll unlock rewards such as added SQC, status passes, and more. And starting in 2027, if you have an Aeroplan premium credit card, you can receive a 10 per cent SQC bonus based on your previous year’s earnings.
“Aeroplan has grown into one of the most rewarding and widely used travel loyalty programs,” said Scott O’Leary, vice president of loyalty and product at Air Canada.
“Our most engaged members do more than just fly with us — they earn with our partners, choose flexible fares, and carry Aeroplan credit cards. These changes help us better recognize their loyalty and keep improving the experience.”
