Spurs do not want to offer Dyche anything more than a role until the end of this campaign. Former Monaco head coach Adi Hütter has now ruled himself out of any interim role after Telegraph Sport revealed he was under consideration. In a statement, the Austrian said: “In recent days and weeks, I have been increasingly linked with various clubs.

“However, as I already stated immediately after my time at Monaco, I would prefer not to work as a head coach again until the start of the new season at the earliest. My position on this matter has not changed since then.”

If De Zerbi cannot be persuaded to come now, the most likely route for Spurs is to employ someone with strong links to the club, such as a former manager, coach or player, and probably not on their own. Harry Redknapp, Tim Sherwood and Glenn Hoddle have all made it clear they would do it while former coach Ryan Mason, who has been a caretaker in the past, is available after being sacked by West Bromwich Albion. Another option is Chris Hughton while consideration has even been given to senior player Ben Davies, who is currently out injured.

Robbie Keane, another former Spurs player, who is in charge at Ferencvaros, is thought to only be interested in becoming the permanent head coach.

In the meantime, assistant coach Bruno Saltor will lead training for the first-team players who have not been selected by their national teams.
