The Toronto Blue Jays might have parted ways with Bo Bichette shortly after some World Series heroics, but it seems like their fans never treated him the way those on his new team have.
After just three games with the New York Mets, Bichette has found himself as the victim of some fan hostility as he struggles in the very start of the season.
“It took Bichette all of two games to hear boos and all of three games for them to become impossible to ignore,” MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo wrote of the infielder’s debut in Queens. “While it’s an extremely small sample of just 15 plate appearances, Bichette is striking out more than 3.5 times as often as he did last season.”

The Blue Jays seemed ready to move on from Bichette at the end of last season, though he had a sensational season at the plate and returned from an injury to hit a three-run home run in Game 7 of the World Series.
The team had acquired infielder Andres Gimenez, who replaced Bichette at shortstop for the playoffs, then signed Japanese star Kazuma Okamoto as some additional infield reinforcement, which seemed to reduce the need for a reunion with Bichette.
Instead, the long-time shortstop took a short-term deal with the Mets and agreed to move to third base. While his defensive transition has gone relatively smoothly, his struggles at the plate have frustrated home fans, though he seems to have taken the boos surprisingly well.
“If anything, I thought it took too long,” Bichette said of the booing on Sunday, according to The Athletic’s Will Sammon. “I get it. I thought my at-bats were terrible, too.”

But Bichette also noted that it was a reaction he had never experienced in Toronto.
“In Toronto, Bichette said he was booed ‘by random fans here and there,’” Sammon wrote.
Blue Jays fans might not have seen Bichette struggle immediately after signing a hefty free agent contract, but they certainly have had occasion to grow frustrated with Bichette. After an All-Star campaign in 2023, he slashed just .225/.277/.322 in a harsh regression for 2024.
But it seems that he never hears a major-league crowd turn on him the way Mets fans have during the team’s opening series.
“Over seven seasons in Toronto, Bo Bichette said, he never heard more than scattered boos from random fans,” DiComo added.
After rising to fame as a member of the Blue Jays, many things will be different for Bichette this season. And in addition to a new position and new teammates, that evidently includes higher expectations from the fanbase.
