WEST BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WNEM) — The FBI has released new details about the attack on Temple Israel.
The attack happened on March 12 when a 41-year-old armed suspect, Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, died after ramming a truck into Temple Israel.
The FBI said it believes the suspect was motivated by Hezbollah.
“Based on evidence gathered to date, we assessed this act to be a Hezbollah-inspired act of terrorism purposely targeting the Jewish community and the largest Jewish temple in Michigan,” said Jennifer Runyan, a special agent for FBI Detroit.
At a press conference Monday, March 30, the agency said Ghazali bought an AR-15-style rifle, dozens of rounds of ammunition and researched Temple Israel online just days before the attack.
The FBI also said Ghazali bought gas and torch lighters, which the FBI believes he used to set his truck on fire. Ghazali died in the attack, and a security guard was injured.
