– An Auckland house, once owned by Daniel Vettori, sold for over $2m, exceeding its RV by $300,000.

– The Remuera home attracted significant interest, with seven buyers registered and four bidding at auction.

– The property featured an architectural renovation, light-filled spaces and custom-built kitchen cabinetry.

An Auckland house that once belonged to former Black Caps cricketer Daniel Vettori and his wife Mary sold under the hammer this week for just over $2 million, more than $300,000 above its RV.

The sale of the north-facing three-bedroom, two-bathroom home on Mainston Road, in Remuera, had been brought forward and opened with a pre-auction offer of $1.925m.

Bayleys listing agent Carolyn Ryan said the house had been very popular, with around 100 groups through two weekends of open homes.

Seven buyers registered for the auction, with four placing bids in the room. “The home was hugely popular, the hammer came down, and the new owner was delighted,” Ryan told OneRoof.

The buyer was won over by the amount of light that made its way into the house. “You knew it was going to be warm in winter, but then you have the shade of the trees in summer.”

The person who made the pre-auction offer didn’t win the house in the end, with Ryan telling OneRoof it was always hard to have disappointed buyers.

“I think the thing with the pre-auction offer, though, is that it does give buyers confidence that the property is going to be sold 100%.

“In some ways I think a pre-auction offer makes them more nervous, but in some ways I feel like it should give you more confidence; the vendor has accepted the price and it’s really just down to you putting your best foot forward.

“There were certainly some disappointed people and you always feel for them and I just wish I had seven more homes like Mainston Road.”

Ryan marketed the property as a “home with soul”, saying it had been reimagined with an architectural renovation by the prior owner, Daniel Vettori.

The easy-care configuration featured warm wooden floors, light-filled living spaces, and an elevated tree-house quality.

Custom-built charcoal cabinetry anchored the entertainer’s kitchen upstairs, while high ceilings and integrated storage added layers of sophistication.

OneRoof reported last month that the vendors had bought the house off the Vettoris 15 years ago for just over $1m.

The Vettoris had added a new kitchen and bathrooms to the house, before selling up and shifting to neighbouring St Heliers.

Ryan told OneRoof after the auction that there were plenty of buyers out and about, and she was getting a lot of interest in “a real cutie” she was marketing on St Johns Road, in Meadowbank.

The two-bedroom property, which has an RV of $760,000 and goes to auction on August 13, has seen about 40 groups through each weekend of open homes.

“A well-presented property always seems to be doing well at the moment.”
