YOUNTVILLE, Calif. (KGO) — Three people were killed and six were injured in a three-vehicle crash on Silverado Trail in Napa County on Saturday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.

On Monday, the Napa County Sheriff’s Office released the names of the three women killed.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

Vivian Bertolino, 65, and Linda Wolters, 62, both of American Canyon and Katrina Clarke, 65, of Sacramento, died in the crash.

CHP Officer Marc Renspurger said the crash unfolded after the driver of a Mitsubishi sideswiped an oncoming BMW SUV on Silverado Trail near Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars.

“Somehow he sideswiped one vehicle, which seemed to caused him to lose control of the vehicle and that’s when, because he lost control, he crossed over into the northbound lane from the southbound lane and that’s where the head-on collision happened,” Officer Renspurger said.

Bertolino and Wolters were in the Mitsubishi and Clarke was a passenger in the Toyota Prius that was hit.

The driver of Mitsubishi was arrested on suspicion of DUI. ABC7 Eyewitness News won’t name him until his arraignment, but it’s not his first arrest.

ABC7 Eyewitness News went to the court house to review his record and he’s previously been charged with possession of a controlled substance, among other driving infractions such as driving with an open container and speeding.

CHP is reminding everyone to drive slowly in Napa, especially that stretch of the road.

“For some reason that stretch of road has become rather deadly in Napa County and all we really can do is try to step up our enforcement out there,” Officer Renspurger said. “Most of the roads around here are two lane undivided roadways so there’s nothing stopping traffic from crossing over these double yellow lines, except for paint and good driving so all we can ask is that people slow down.”

The driver is still in the hospital with serious injuries and is expected to survive.
