Back in January, a video went viral showing a woman diving into a bright blue sea, then moments later, a large nurse shark taking a nibble on her leg.
That was 36-year-old Tayane Cachoeira Dalazen, a surfer, lawyer, and social media personality. Dalazen suffered minor injuries from the incident – a nice set of teeth marks to scar her thigh – but she lived to tell the tale. And she did. Quite a bit.
But the original footage of the incident was grainy. Not the best angle. And now, a new video has emerged, showing the encounter much clearer. See below.
In the video, Dalazen can be seen blissfully diving off the boat headfirst, twirling in the bright blue water. Then, almost immediately, a rather large nurse shark approaches and takes a curious bite from her leg. Nurse sharks are some of the more docile shark species, commonly called the “puppy dogs of the sea,” so this encounter was extremely rare.
Posting the footage, Dalazen wrote:
“A new video of the incident I experienced with a nurse shark in Fernando de Noronha exactly three months ago has gone viral on @leodias.
“This time, the footage is clearer and shows the moment from the front with great clarity.
“I believe it’s important to clarify one point: diving with nurse sharks is a common activity in many parts of the world and involves a species known for its non-aggressive behavior, which does not prey on humans.
“What happened was an isolated incident, outside the expected pattern for this species.”

Since the incident, and her recovery, Dalazen has returned to surfing, scoring a session at the coveted Boa Vista Village wave pool in São Paulo, shown off her battle scar, and even reunited with the same species of shark that chomped on her leg.
Regarding the reunion, Dalazen wrote:
“And there was our official reunion! After 3 months from the shark bite, I dived back in Fernando de Noronha with sand sharks. I felt no fear, just happiness to be able to behold these magnificent animals.”
A happy ending for all.
