TULARE COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux confirms Randy Hoppert is the deputy who was shot and killed in Porterville on Thursday morning.

Hoppert served in the U.S. Navy from 2010 to 2015 and joined the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office on January 5, 2020. He leaves behind a wife who is four months pregnant.

His grandfather previously served as a Tulare County undersheriff.

“We did a final salute in honor of him and allowed the wife and Mom to say their last regard in that moment it’s a very emotional time,” said Sheriff Mike Boudreaux. “They’re having trouble even standing on their own 2 feet. brings tears to even the most callous of us all.”

Hoppert was serving an eviction notice at a home on Brian Avenue near North Salisbury Street around 10:40 a.m. when shots were fired.

Hoppert was struck, and after a tactical rescue was taken to Sierra View Medical Center in Porterville, where he later died.

“We have a four-month-old baby that will never know his or her father,” Boudreaux said. “This is senseless. I’m angered over the whole thing.”

A procession for Hoppert was held from Sierra View Medical Center and ended at the Tulare Coroner’s Office.

Hoppert was also a U.S. military veteran. He served as a Navy Corpsman from 2010 to 2015.

In 2013, Action News spoke with Hoppert when his name was added to a Brave Project Banner in Visalia, recognizing local service members.

“Just gives a sense of pride, just know that people notice us when we’re back home,” Hoppert said at the time.

Sheriff Boudreaux has the following message to his hurting community.

“Tomorrow we begin healing, we get to grieve, we’re gonna grieve and grieving,” he said. “It’s a process, but we will heal. We’re gonna be OK. We’re gonna get through it at the end of it the other day while honoring him.”

Flags in Tulare County are being flown at half-staff and will not be flown fully until Deputy Hoppert is laid to rest.
