A teenager was killed and four others were seriously injured early Saturday in a suspected DUI crash in Novato, police said.
Novato police said several 911 callers reported a crash just before 1 a.m. near San Marin Drive and Simmons Lane. Officers arrived to find a single-vehicle wreck involving five teenagers ages 16 to 18, all with major injuries.
All five were taken to a hospital. Police said the 17-year-old driver was under the influence of alcohol. One passenger later died at the hospital, while the other three passengers remained in serious or critical condition.
Authorities did not release the name, age or hometown of the teen who died. Police said preliminary information indicates the teens were not from Novato.
Eastbound San Marin Drive was shut down at Estado Way for several hours as Novato police traffic and crime scene investigators processed the scene.
The crash remains under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact the Novato Police Department Traffic Section at 415-897-4361.
“We understand that this is an incredibly difficult situation for all the families involved as they navigate the weight of this tragedy,” the department said.
The area around San Marin Drive and Simmons Lane has been the site of other serious crashes in recent years, including a 2019 wreck on Simmons Lane that killed a 16-year-old driver, according to previous police reports.
