Paying more tax is a thought that sends a shudder down most people’s spines.

But one economist believes it will actually leave low-income earners better off and boost the economy.

Richard Holden has suggested the GST be raised from 10 per cent to 15 per cent.

The economist believes this should be across a broader range of products such as food, education and health.

Offset by a $3300 rebate for all taxpayers, he believes it would bring in an extra $24 billion in revenue each year.
