Update: Pa. man who shot 2 state troopers had killed his neighbor: report

A suspect is dead after shooting two Pennsylvania State Police troopers in Susquehanna County Thursday morning, police told the Associated Press.

The shooting took place around 11 a.m., along Route 171, near Thompson, Pa., according to state police Col. Christopher Paris.

Police said the troopers were “dispatched to check the welfare of an individual” after shots were fired in the area.

“Upon their arrival, they were immediately fired upon and ambushed. They are very lucky to be alive,” police told the Associated Press.

After the ambush, one of the wounded troopers applied a tourniquet to the other injured trooper, while a third trooper assisted in their rescue.

More information about the specific call that led the troopers to the area will be released later, police said.

Gov. Josh Shapiro met with one of the wounded troopers in the hospital and said he was on his way to meet the other. Both officers are in stable condition.

Around 3 p.m., Susquehanna County’s deputy coroner, Angelica Howell, said she was en route to where the shooting happened.

“I can tell you that the actor is deceased, and more information will be released specifically about what happened today,” Paris said. The troopers’ police vehicles were hit by multiple bullets, he said.

Shapiro announced the shooting on X Thursday afternoon.

Police have not provided the age or gender of the suspect nor said how the suspect died.
