With Chris Forino forced off the field because of a head injury and his side 3-2 down with 10 men, the Bolton boss sent on Cissoko with just 90 seconds of normal time remaining.
And once again, the Whites came up trumps in stoppage time, the winger scoring a magnificent equaliser in the 101st minute to ensure a point, and in all probability a play-off berth in League One too.
It was Bolton’s 13th post 90th minute goal of the season and, Schumacher admitted after the game, a Hail Mary decision.
“Chris (Forino) had to keep coming off the pitch because of a gash in his head and I just thought ‘get another player on’ because we were down to nine men for that 30 seconds,” he said.
“We threw Ibbi on at right-back and just said: ‘Don’t worry about it, mate, just run forward because we need to score anyway. If you have to defend, do your best.
“Thankfully he didn’t have to defend. Huddersfield were trying to run the clock down, waste time, the ball was going out of play all the time. But we have seen it before when teams try and do that against us, you are only at risk of giving us extra minutes. We will keep going to the very end.
“Credit to Ibbi, I’m made up for him because he’s such a popular member of the squad, he never stops smiling. I’m surprised it didn’t end up over the stand but I’m delighted for him because it was a brilliant finish.
“And he can do that with both feet as well. We see it in training and he can be just as good with his left as he can with his right foot.”
Cissoko has started just two games for Wanderers since January 4, and his enigmatic style has not always found favour with the supporters.
“We have a love hate relationship,” beamed the Dutchman after the final whistle. “But I love the fans.
“Obviously, when I’m not playing great, I can assume that they are not happy, but days like today, they are great.
“This was my first time scoring in the last minute. I have to say, this feeling is incredible, honestly. Wow, what a feeling. I wish I could do it again.”
Cissoko also thanked his team-mates after wild celebrations for his goal – including substitute Thierry Gale, who picked up a yellow card after sprinting on to the pitch from the bench.
“They know I have had some tough, tough periods, and you can see when I score. Every goal when I score, they are amazing, so happy. That gives me confidence as well.”
Wanderers finished the weekend in third spot, a point above Bradford City. The play-off picture should be clearer on Tuesday night when all of their immediate play-off rivals are in action.
Bradford City host Plymouth Argyle, Stockport County face Mansfield Town, Stevenage take on Barnsley and Luton Town go to relegated Rotherham United.
