Leicester City chairman Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha said he “will try” to keep investing into the club following their relegation to League One.

Tuesday night’s 2-2 draw with Hull sealed City’s fate, sending them down to the third tier for just the second time in their history, with Top releasing a statement saying he is responsible.

But the chairman then spoke to supporters outside the reception of the King Power Stadium, with fans protesting and jeering for more than an hour after full-time.

City have made more than £270m in losses over the past four years of accounts and so there is concern over how the club may cope with the drastic fall in revenue that comes with being in the third tier.

Top has put money into the club, but City have also used Australian bank Macquarie to take out loans to aid cash flow.

While speaking to supporters, Top said: “I did stay here 15 years and I put in a lot of money.” When asked if that will continue, he replied: “I will try.”

Discussing the club’s relegation, Top said: “It’s a bad day. I cannot blame anyone. I can blame myself. It’s not right. I tried everything. We all tried. The players tried. I know that it’s not enough.

“I love to be here. We have to understand each other because we all try. It’s not about who is wrong now, it’s about what’s next. I will try.”

In the statement released earlier on Tuesday night, Top spoke of making “necessary decisions” but did not explain further.

The statement read: “We will take the necessary decisions to move the club forward, working together to rebuild, improve, and restore the standards expected of Leicester City.

“Our objective is clear – to respond strongly and compete to move this club forward again.”
