A man is dead, and a section of Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge was closed Thursday morning as police respond to a crash.

Callers to 1130 NewsRadio first reported the incident near 272 Street, or River Road, around 6 a.m.

In a statement, the Maple Ridge RCMP confirmed that a driver had struck a pedestrian who was “trying to corral his dogs” around 5:45 a.m.

Mounties say he died of his injuries.

Images from the scene show police surrounding a stopped sedan with a badly-damaged windshield.

Drivers can take Dewdney Trunk Road as an alternate route.

Police had originally reported closing the highway between 240 Street and as far east as 280 Street, but later confirmed that the closure begins just west of 272 Street, providing more access to and from Dewdney Trunk Road.

Around 10:45 a.m., DriveBC confirmed that the highway had reopened to eastbound traffic.
