Israelis could not even celebrate Independence Day together this week; some tuned into the official, government-led torch-lighting ceremonies in Jerusalem, while thousands more attended alternative ceremonies focused on the message of preserving liberal democracy, in protest. But the one thing that unifies nearly all Israelis, primarily the Jewish population, is the fear of existential threat.
