Donegal’s Conor Kelly has won a superb gold medal at the European Under 20 Athletics Championships.
The Finn Valley AC man blew away his competition in Finland this evening to take the win in fine style in the 400m final.
Kelly had been tipped by many as one of the favourites heading into the championships, having recently dipped his personal best below 46 seconds for the first time.
The final would see Kelly not only topple his personal best once again, but also set a new U20 national record in the process.
He ran a blistering time of 45.83 seconds, finishing more than half a second ahead of second-placed finisher Milann Klemenic of France.
That time also puts 18-year-old Kelly within 1.1 seconds of David Gillick’s senior national record in the 400m – a record that may not stand for too long as the young prodigy continues to step up the ranks and (hopefully) rack up even more successes on the international stage.
