A dramatic week awaits as the second automatic promotion place and play-off ties in the Championship will be decided.
Middlesbrough’s 5-1 victory over Watford kept their faint automatic promotion hopes alive, and they can still head to Wrexham on the final day with promotion without the need for play-offs a possibility.
That will depend on the result when Ipswich Town travel to Southampton on Tuesday evening. If Ipswich manage to win at St Mary’s then Boro’s top-two chances will officially be over. However, any other result will mean Boro still have a chance.
As well as Boro, Ipswich and Southampton, Millwall are also still in the hunt for the final automatic promotion place alongside champions Coventry City.
Meanwhile, Boro’s final-day opponents Wrexham are battling for the final play-off spot, with Hull City and Derby County also hoping to secure that sixth spot on the last day of the regular season.
It promises to be an exciting final day, particularly if Ipswich fail to win on Tuesday. Even if Boro don’t manage to finish in the top two, their final league position, and those of their rivals, will be key in determining who Kim Hellberg’s side then go on to meet in the play-offs, and which side holds home advantage in the decisive second leg.
