PALACE CLINCH COMMUNITY SHIELD WITH SHOOT-OUT WIN
Crystal Palace downed Premier League champions Liverpool 3-2 on penalties to win the Community Shield after a 2-2 draw at Wembley.
Justin Devenny was Palace’s match-winner as he slammed home the final penalty in a shoot-out in which Mohamed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott all fluffed their lines for Liverpool.
The Reds twice went ahead in normal time on Sunday, with new signings Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong on target inside the opening 21 minutes – either side of Jean-Philippe Mateta converting from the penalty spot after Virgil van Dijk’s foul on Ismaila Sarr.
Yet a resurgent Palace deservedly equalised through Sarr in the 77th minute, with Liverpool fortunate not to concede a penalty when Mac Allister handled in the box.
Oliver Glasner’s team, though, kept up their momentum in the shoot-out. Dean Henderson made two big saves, setting the stage for Devenny, on as a late substitute for the injured Marc Guehi, to fire home the winning spot-kick and send the Eagles fans into raptures.
