STAR Limerick hurler Kyle Hayes has sparked fresh injury fears after sustaining a serious knock during a championship outing with his club.

Concerns are mounting over the injury status of the five-time All Star recipient after he went down injured during the round two clash between Kildimo-Pallaskenry and Newcastle West in the Limerick senior hurling championship on Friday evening.

After 17 minutes, Newcastle West full-back Maurice Murphy was shown a red card by referee Johnny Murphy for a high challenge on Hayes.

Play was halted for around five minutes in Sean Finn Park, Rathkeale as Hayes lay on the ground in visible discomfort.

Physio Mark Melbourne quickly attended to him, assisted by some of the Kildimo-Pallaskenry mentors, before helping him from the field.

The 2024 All-Star did not return to the action for Kildimo-Pallaskenry for the duration of the game but remained on the sideline, watching the remainder of the game on his feet.

“It looked very serious at the time and there was a lot of worry in the grounds. It looked nasty. If it was someone else I’m not sure if they would have been able to get to their feet like Kyle did. Kyle being Kyle, tough out, he got up on his feet again,” said one supporter at the game.

Concerns have been mounting over the weekend after a photo was circulated online of the 27-year-old lying on a hospital bed wearing a neckbrace, in his club jersey. The Leader has not been able to ascertain if this is a legitimate photo.

The Kildimo man was expected to attend the wedding of his county teammate Diarmaid Byrnes in Killarney on Saturday but it’s not known if he was in a position to travel.

Kildimo-Pallaskenry sit on three points after two games in group two of the Limerick senior hurling championship, Declan Nash’s side have recorded a victory over Dromin-Athlacca and played out a draw with Newcastle West.

Kildimo-Pallaskenry face Adare in round three of the Limerick senior hurling championship on Friday August 22 in Sean Finn Park, Rathkeale at 6:30pm.

Hayes has lined out for his club’s football and hurling teams this year.
