More than a dozen earthquakes shook Brawley, Calif. Saturday night, including a 4.4-magnitude quake that was felt across Southern California’s inland area.
The quakes come a day after a series of earthquakes greater than a 3.0 magnitude struck near Redlands.
The first of Saturday evening’s earthquakes was a 3.5-magnitude quake, which happened at 4:14 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The initial earthquake was followed by 2.6 and 2.8-magnitude quakes.
At 5:34 p.m., a 3.4-magnitude earthquake hit the area, followed by a 3.1 earthquake minutes later.
At 7:22 p.m., a 4.4-magnitude earthquake hit the region. A USGS map of the earthquake shows the shaking was felt to the north in Riverside County and to the south in Baja California. At 8:13 p.m. another 4.0 quake hit the area.

All of the quakes have occurred relatively close to the San Andreas Fault line but not along the fault itself. According to computer models, the strongest earthquake the San Andreas Fault is capable of producing is an 8.3.
California residents and visitors are encouraged to download the state’s Earthquake Readiness Guide.
The state website warns that “if you live in or travel to areas that could be impacted by an earthquake, preparation is vital, as these events can strike suddenly, at any time, with little warning.”
