There is a huge sense of sadness at the passing of renowned West Donegal businessman Stephen ‘Ann’ O’Donnell.

Mr O’Donnell, who owned the hugely successful O’Donnell’s Fuels (Mace) in Crolly, passed away peacefully at the Donegal Hospice surrounded by his loving family.

Stephen will be remembered as an astute businessman who started the fledgling business back in the late 1980s.

But as well as being an extremely hard worker, he will also be remembered by his family, friends and many customers as someone who always had time to chat and look after people.

Be that a fill of petrol or a newspaper, Stephen always had a word fro friend or stranger.

Never one to rest on his laurels, Stephen, with the full support of his family, expanded the O’Donnell’s Fuels brand to make it one of the most successful home heating oil delivery services in Donegal opening another self service Go Station in Ellistrin outside Letterkenny in 2017.

Hundreds of people have already left their own personal tributes for the Ranafast man whom many described as a visionary in business.

Among them was Fr John Joe Duffy who recalled Stephen and his family’s kindness during the Creeslough tragedy.

He wrote “I remember one evening leaving it too late to put fuel in my car and I called Stephen very late in the evening and he came over filled the car and wouldn’t even take the money for it.

“That generosity carried on through his family was so evident when tragedy struck in Creeslough. Again that wonderful quiet and private generosity was there in abundance.

“Stephen was a visionary in business and always had a great welcome for people.”

Alan Garfield wrote “Stephen Ó Dónaill was a gentleman, a comic sometimes (and very serious other times) to myself, my family, and for the past 34 years to loads and loads (over 500) students from the USA.

“For us, he was the face and the warm welcoming attitude of Donegal.

“He welcomed us and told as many stories as he listened to. He will always be remembered fondly in our extended family. May his memory be for a blessing.”

Stephen was predeceased by their first born baby son, grandchild Pio, parents Peadar and Ann and his brother Patsy.

He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Bríd, Sons & Daughters-in-law, Stephen (Róisín), Gavin (Moya), Damien (Orlaith), grandchildren; Caoimhe, Ultán, Ruadhán, Bláithín, Croía agus Áine. His sisters Bridie, Margaret, Caitríona, Anne Marie and
brother John.

Deeply regretted and lovingly remembered by his nephews, nieces, brothers in law, sisters in law, extended family and many friends.
