Atlanta Beltline deadly stabbing: Stabbing suspect also threw rock at Postal worker, police say – WSB-TV Channel 2

ATLANTA — Atlanta police confirmed officers are responding to a deadly stabbing on Thursday, part of what police call a random, isolated attack.

The attack has caused nearby schools to go on lockdown.

The crime scene is at 1764 Flagler Ave. NE, near the Beltline. The woman stabbed here is dead, according to police, part of crime spree.

Atlanta Beltline stabbing suspect Atlanta police are looking for a man suspected of randomly stabbing a woman along the Beltline, killing her.

The woman was in critical condition when she was taken to the hospital. She died at the hospital.

APD said they are searching for a suspect.

“Police officers are scouring the city,” said APD Chief Darin Schierbaum during a news conference on the scene. “We’re going to catch this person.”

A Be On the Lookout has been issued for the suspect in this stabbing. He was riding a bicycle and dressed in black. Police said the suspect was seen on surveillance camera on the Beltline.

Before the stabbing on the Beltline, the suspect attacked a USPS person with a rock.

APD says if you see this suspect, do not approach and contact authorities immediately by calling 911.

The chief says officers have a massive response by air via drone, on bike and on foot.

APD is also coordinating with schools in the area to ensure the safety of students in nearby schools.

live over the belt line right now. This is Northeast Atlanta. Police are investigating where they say a man stabbed a woman to death. The stabbing happened right after they say that same man attacked a postal worker with a rock along Plasters Avenue. This is also some new video of that scene. In the last half hour, police held a news conference to release these surveillance pictures of the suspected attacker who was last seen riding a bicycle heading south along the Beltline Trail in northeast Atlanta. You can see on this map. Where the stabbing and the rock attack happened very close to Ansley Mall, and we do have live team two coverage for you of the active search. Shelter’s Courtney Francisco is at the edge of the crime scene where the police chief just gave us an update. You were there asking questions. Courtney, what did you learn? Let me give you an idea of where this is happening. This is near the Ainsley Golf Club where police have this overpass blocked with crime tape and a patrol unit. Over here you can see the golf club where people are still golfing right next to detectives gathering evidence and further down there’s a subdivision here. News chopper two, it gave us a view from above. I want to show you because the police chief came out here just minutes ago and he said just after 12:10 this afternoon, people here, they started hearing sirens rushing to this area because officers were called out and they found a woman who had been stabbed. Medics rushed her to the hospital where she died and moments before that, police. Believe the person who stabbed her attacked a USPS employee with a rock at the postal facility on Plasters Avenue, but that person is alive. Then police believe the suspect got on an orange bicycle and rode here to the belt line where the stabbing happened. Listen to what the chief told us just minutes ago. Right now we actually have officers on foot, bicycles and cars, and our air unit, drone, and canines that are scouring the area trying to identify this individual. And police say they are coordinating with the schools that are on lockdown now. It’s about time for the students to get out of schools and go home. So right now that’s a big piece of this. Now our live team coverage continues right now with Channel 2 investigative reporter Ashley Lincoln. Ashley was right near the scene immediately after this happened when that search began. Ashley. Yes, Karen, we’re on Avery Drive right on the other side of the Beltline and the big thing that police want to know right now is where that individual is and they also want to warn people in surrounding communities like this one to stay vigilant, to stay on alert, to get more details about that description of that suspect, a black man wearing a black shirt with orange and white lettering on his shirt. They want homes like this one with doorbell cameras. They want homeowners to monitor their cameras, see if you see that individual in your neighborhood walking past your house. If you do, contact Atlanta police immediately. We of course been talking to people in this community who are stunned about the news of a stabbing that police say appears to be random of a person from their community. It’s a shame that something like that can happen like that in our neighborhood. Uh, kids are out in the afternoons on the bikes, scooters, weekends, people are packed. There’s cameras all up and down the beltline. And again police say it’s all hands on deck at this point. They have officers in the air. They have officers on bikes. They have officers on foot, and they have officers in their patrol vehicles surveying and scouring this entire area to try to track down that suspect. We can’t be clear enough if anyone sees anyone matching that description to contact Atlanta police. We’re going to stay out here and gather more details on who this individual. possibly is we’ll have another update for you tonight in the next hour. Reporting live tonight in Midtown. Ashley Lincoln, Channel 2 Action News. Ashley, thank you for that. So of course we do want to give you another look at the images. This is the person that police are searching for. You can see on the back of his shirt, it says something flavor, friends, and flatbread. Had to get close to the picture there to see it, but if you see that person right. Around anywhere where you may be, you need to call 911. And as you know, the Beltline is very popular and often crowded but not immune to random crime, especially around this noon hour when this took place. In fact, this is the second stabbing in two years. Along that same stretch of the Belt Line. In July of 2024, an escaped inmate stabbed two people near Montgomery Ferry Drive. One man died. In February of 2022, sixty-year-old Thomas Arnold was shot and killed along the Beltline in southeast Atlanta. He was walking home after a night out with friends near Elizabeth Street in Inman Park. A jury convicted two men last year. Then in January 2021, a woman says a man attacked her as she walked the belt line near Hill Street. She says he grabbed her, threw her to the ground, and put a gun to her head. Thankfully she was able to get away.
