Villa have been looking at new goalkeepers and Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen and Manchester City’s James Trafford are both admired by the recruitment team.
There is no guarantee that Martínez will depart though, because of his age, wage demands and star quality.
New contracts for existing players will also be on the agenda. Youri Tielemans and Ezri Konsa both have two years left on their present deals and negotiations are expected to advance soon.
It seems inconceivable that Villa will not reward Emiliano Buendía with new terms, too. Buendía was man of the match against Freiburg and has completed a remarkable redemption arc after coming close to leaving last year, when Bayer Leverkusen and Leeds United both held talks with him.
Buendía said: “I’ve had some very bad moments, I’ve been very low; injuries, finding myself in a difficult momentum to play more often, but I kept believing in myself all the time.
“I always trusted my work ethic and also I always thought I could be important for this club and team. Today I have to enjoy it.
Villa will continue their celebrations with an open-top bus parade in Birmingham on Thursday.
Emery’s final assignment of this season will be at Manchester City on Sunday.
