A new fire broke out in Spaniard’s Bay on Tuesday afternoon, but it’s under control.

Residents of Brown’s Road were asked to evacuate immediately and go to the town hall.

People who live on Rectory Avenue, Casey’s Lane and Mint Cove Pond Road were under an evacuation alert.

A social media post made by the town just after 7 p.m. Tuesday said the “fire is still sparking up, additional crews are on the scene, [and] RCMP are notifying any residents that need to be on alert.”

Spaniard’s Bay Mayor Paul Brazil told CBC the fire began near the Anglican cemetery on Maul Tree Hill, and he observed flames and smoke in the area.

Air and ground crews fighting new fire in Spaniard’s Bay

The fire started near the Anglican cemetery on Maul Tree Hill, according to Spaniard’s Bay Mayor Paul Brazil. Volunteer firefighters, already stretched thin fighting a separate 6,000-hectare fire in Conception Bay North, are there with a helicopter and water bomber, according to Brazil.

Brazil said one water bomber and a helicopter were overhead in the area, and the Spaniard’s Bay fire department was on the scene with crews from two neighbouring communities.

He said it was a moment of panic and stress.

“Today we sort of had to rely on the good graces of our neighbour fire departments to come to our aid to get a fire under control that was within hundreds of feet of a residential area… before it got out of hand and swept through the town,” Brazil said in an interview with CBC Radio’s On The Go Tuesday afternoon.

Brazil said he was pleased with the quick response to the fire.

Although the situation is under control, Brazil said crews are in for a long night putting out hot spots and potential flare-ups.

Spaniard’s Bay is located approximately 30 kilometres from the out-of-control Kingston fire in Conception Bay North.
