A suspect was arrested minutes after the attack

A man was left fighting for his life after a stabbing near Manchester city centre. Officers descended on Great Ducie Street, in the Strangeways area, at 11.32pm last night (May 30).
Greater Manchester Police says it was called out to reports of a stabbing. The force says that officers arrived seven minutes later to find a man in his 30s with stab wounds to his back.
He was rushed to Manchester Royal Infirmary with potentially life-threatening injuries, GMP says. Officers arrested a suspect at 11.49pm on nearby Barker Street.

The suspect, a 20-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault. He remains in custody for questioning this morning (Sunday) while officers continue their enquiries.
Chief Inspector Peter Crowe, from GMP’s City of Manchester division, said: “This swift response emphasises that Greater Manchester Police have no tolerance for knife crime, and we will work proactively to prosecute those who choose to carry knives. This was an extremely violent attack, and we are working to support the victim and is family at this terrifying time.
“Detectives are working hard to understand the motive behind this attack. However, we do not believe there to be a wider threat to the community.
“A scene will remain in place while our investigation continues, and we urge anyone with information to come forward and speak to us. We understand how worrying this will be, and there will be an increased police presence in the area. I would encourage anyone with concerns to talk to us.”
