Homicide investigators have begun to share details about why police converged on a Maple Ridge wharf Saturday evening.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) says the Maple Ridge RCMP responded to reports of a fight in progress on River Road near Port Haney shortly before 7 p.m.

“Upon arrival, police located a 28-year-old man with life-threatening injuries. Despite life-saving efforts by first responders, the man died at the scene.”

Mounties quickly called IHIT to take over the investigation.

Investigators believe it was an isolated and targeted incident, in which the victim and suspect knew each other.

“The investigation is ongoing; however, the incident is not believed to be related to gang activity,” said Sgt. Freda Fong.

She says witness interviews are underway as investigators work to determine the events leading up to the altercation.

Anyone with additional information to share is asked to call 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or email ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
