A man who died following a swimming accident in Co Kerry has been named locally as Padraig (Paudie) O’Rahilly.
Gardaí and emergency services personnel were alerted to the incident after the man, aged in his late 20s, got into difficulty in the River Flesk in Killarney at around 3.30pm on Tuesday.
The incident is understood to have occurred at the rear of houses and a soccer pitch in the Woodlawn area of the town.
The alarm was raised by a friend and paramedics, the fire service, and a doctor attended the scene. People from the soccer pitch also provided assistance.
Mr O’Rahilly was subsequently removed from the water and pronounced deceased at the scene. He was from the Barraduff area of Killarney and it is understood he worked in retail.
Gardaí said an autopsy examination will take place in due course, and a file on the matter will now be prepared for the coroner.
It is understood that gardaí are treating the incident as a tragic accident.
