A stretch of the East Lancashire Road was closed this morning amid a ‘police incident’.

Part of the major A580 road, which connects Greater Manchester and Merseyside, was shut off near Wigan. It was first closed off both ways between Millfield Lane and the junction for the M6 at Haydock.

The closure was put in place at around 11pm last night (Monday), according to traffic alert service Inrix. This morning (Tuesday), the westbound side of the road remained shut from the M6 junction to Kenyons Lane South.

Traffic maps showed congestion building up to the closure and in the surrounding areas. The road was fully reopened at around 7.45am.

Merseyside Police have been contacted for information on the incident.
