List of active weather alerts as severe weather moves through Southeast Michigan

4Warn Weather – The National Weather Service has extended a tornado watch for eight counties in southeast Michigan as strong storms continue to move across the region Thursday night.

The watch remains in effect until 2 a.m. Friday and includes Lapeer, Lenawee, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw, and Wayne counties.

The extension comes as severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and possible tornadoes track through portions of southeastern Michigan.

Residents in communities including Adrian, Ann Arbor, Canton, Dearborn, Ferndale, Imlay City, Lapeer, Livonia, Monroe, Novi, Pontiac, Port Huron, Redford, Royal Oak, Southfield, St. Clair Shores, Sterling Heights, Taylor, Troy, Warren, Waterford, and Westland are urged to remain weather-aware overnight.

A tornado watch means atmospheric conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms. It does not mean a tornado has been spotted.

Forecasters advise residents to monitor weather alerts, have multiple ways to receive warnings, and be prepared to seek shelter quickly if a tornado warning is issued.

The watch was issued amid a broader severe weather threat affecting much of lower Michigan, with storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes.

Emergency officials recommend identifying a safe shelter location in advance, preferably a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows.

The National Weather Service will continue to monitor storm development and issue additional warnings as necessary through the overnight hours.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Livingston and Genesee counties as a fast-moving line of storms capable of producing damaging winds and possible tornadoes moves across southeastern Michigan late Thursday night.

The warning remains in effect until 11:15 p.m. EDT.

At 10:21 p.m., meteorologists detected severe thunderstorms stretching from near St. Johns to the Lansing area and southwest of Eaton Rapids.

The storms were moving east at approximately 55 mph and were capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph.

Forecasters warned that the storms could cause damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

Communities expected to be affected include Laingsburg around 10:30 p.m.; Perry and Morrice around 10:35 p.m.; Owosso around 10:40 p.m.; Fowlerville, Corunna, Bancroft, and Henderson around 10:45 p.m.; Durand, Cohoctah, Byron, and Gregory around 10:50 p.m.; Howell, New Lothrop, Lennon, and Oak Grove around 10:55 p.m.; Pinckney around 11 p.m.; and Hartland and Brighton around 11:05 p.m.

Additional areas in the storm path include Plainfield, Vernon, Lakeland, Chilson, and several recreation areas, such as the Pinckney State Recreation Area and the Island Lake State Recreation Area.

The National Weather Service said tornadoes could develop quickly from the severe thunderstorms and urged residents to remain alert.

Anyone who spots a tornado should immediately seek shelter in a basement or a small interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.

The storms are also capable of producing small hail, with radar indicating hail up to three-quarters of an inch in diameter.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local weather updates and be prepared to take shelter if warnings are upgraded or tornadoes develop.
