McLaren enjoyed the strongest opening day, with Lando Norris topping the timesheets, while Mercedes’ George Russell found himself in second place in a papaya sandwich.
Verstappen and Hamilton, in particular, struggled for outright pace on Friday, with the seven-time world champion down in ninth.
All the teams and drivers have one final practice session to fine-tune their set-ups at a circuit they know so well, but will Norris remain the driver to beat?
