Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney wants to see his old club make “one or two more” signings ahead of the transfer window closes, highlighting the need for a central-midfielder.

With a little over a fortnight of the summer transfer window remaining, United are still in the market for a midfielder and have identified Brighton & Hove Albion ace Carlos Baleba as a player of interest.

The Reds have enjoyed a busy summer of the pitch in preparation for the start of the new Premier League campaign this weekend, bringing in four new players. They have prioritised attacking signings this summer and have drafted in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.

However, Rooney, who is pleased with the addition of Sesko, highlighting what he will bring to the table, believes United still need to add a midfielder to Ruben Amorim’s squad ahead of the window closing on September 1.

“I think it was something that was very much needed,” Rooney told BBC Sport, reflecting on the additions of three attackers. “It’s great they have identified the players they wanted quite early.

Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, saving members £192 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.

Sky will show at least 215 live Premier League games next season, an increase of up to 100 more.

“They got Cunha in, Mbeumo in, and I think Sesko is a really important signing. As a target man, he is quick, he can use both feet and he’s good in the air. I think that is a very important signing for United.

“I would still like to see them sign a solid midfield player who will help control games for them.”

As Rooney was making his address, he was interrupted by fellow pundit Danny Murphy, who suggested Manuel Ugarte is an option available to Amorim to provide control in midfield.

Rooney replied: “I would still like one more. I would like to see Bruno push forward and that [the addition of a midfielder] allows him to go forward and play forward more.

“I think they have made some good signings but I would still like to see one or two more.”
