A man suspected of shooting and killing two people in Pomona was taken into custody after leading the California Highway Patrol on a lengthy pursuit in northern Los Angeles County on Thursday, authorities said.
The shooting happened at an apartment complex in the 100 block of East Monterey Avenue just before 3:20 p.m., according to the Pomona Police Department. When officers arrived, they found a man and a woman who had been shot in the hallway.
Police say the two died at the scene. Their identities have not been released.
The CHP said it was assisting Pomona police in finding the suspect vehicle when it located the black Kia sedan on the northbound 5 Freeway near Roxford Street. The driver, identified by police as 48-year-old Pomona resident Robert Galtman, failed to yield, prompting a pursuit just before 5:30 p.m.
Video from NewsChopper4 showed several CHP vehicles chasing Galtman on the 5 Freeway until he exited around 6:15 p.m.
The pursuit continued north on Lake Hughes Road, passing a remote area of Newhall, and entered a more populated area of Lancaster nearly 30 minutes later.
Just after 7 p.m., a spike strip was deployed, resulting in at least two flat tires. A few minutes later, a CHP pit maneuver brought the car to a stop on 20th Street West and West Avenue K.
Galtman got out of the sedan and appeared to comply with CHP officers, who had their guns drawn, video showed. He was taken into custody around 7:10 p.m., the CHP said.
Officials believe there is no threat to the public.
